The databases and passwords can be found by logging into Cubview and going to the Burns Library group page at    Look for the database link near the center of the page. When you click, it will make you sign in to Cubview, then you can access the databases from the password links. Or, you can print the password list then just use the links on this page.  If this does not work for you for some reason, please email me, Mrs. April Hannah at or else pick up a blue password flyer from the library.

  • Bloom's Literary Reference (Criticism)
After logging in, choose the link "Bloom's Literary Reference." On this database you should search with the title of a short story or poem of Steinbeck's. For example: on search line in upper right corner, enter "Steinbeck Flight." On the Results page, there will be about 25 articles. You can use the tabs across the top to narrow the list to just "Analysis & Criticism," for example. Repeat this strategy for Bret Harte and Jack London stories.
  • EBSCO Literary Reference Center (Critical Analysis)
After log-in you will see five links, choose "Literary Reference Center." You can repeat the search strategy that you used for the last database or you can enter the title of another story. Based on your results, you can use the tabs at the top to narrow the list if necessary.
  • ABC-Clio Social Studies : American History
After you log-in click on AMERICAN HISTORY. In search line upper right corner, enter Bret Harte. There will be a few biographical articles. Do the same for either John Steinbeck or Jack London.
  • Literary E-books Owned by Burns Library
Search this database for our e-book entitled, "How to Write About John Steinbeck." Then look at the Table of Contents of this e-book for the short story you are working on. For example, there is a chapter in this book for "Flight." ONLY FOR STEINBECK....NOT HARTE OR LONDON.
